The Global Waste-Derived Biogas Market was valued at USD51.9 Billion in 2023 and is estimated to reach USD 99.38 Billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of9.21% from 2023 to 2033.
Scope of the market:
Biogas is the combination of gases produced by the process of decomposition, which consists of carbon dioxide, and methane. Biogas may be received from industrial waste, human waste, crop waste, dung, food, or household waste. It is a renewable source and is a substitute for conventional fuels. Waste-derived biogas is used in powering a diesel engine in a dual-fuel model.Waste-derived biogas is made up of 60% methane and 40% CO2. Additionally, increasing usage in industrial waste, and agriculture sewage can be used as a raw material promoting the waste-derived market is witnessing growth in the forecast period. Increasing the awareness of waste management among peasants, towns, and industrial workplaces is the major driver of the global waste-derived biogas market. The shift from conventional and non-renewable energy sources to biogas is also one of the major factors that drive the growth of the market.
Economic Impact of COVID-19:
Organic waste the primary feedstock for biogas production, was affected by the pandemic due to the disruption of the supply chain, for required components which led to reduced capacity of utilization of many biogas plants. Due to the shutdownof many hotels, andrestaurants were closed reducing the amount of commercial organic waste available decreased.Post-pandemic government enhanced support for biogas production through various grants and subsidies.

Recent Developments in the GlobalWaste-Derived Biogas Market:
In 2023:
On June 29th, 2023: Biogas derived from agriculture waste will be converted into premium bioLNG.
Wärtsilä has been chosen to provide equipment and expertise for a bioLNG project in Sweden. The solution shared by Wärtsilä will enhance the quality of biogas derived from agricultural waste and can convert it into premium bioLNG. Further orders will be placed by Gasum AB which will be located near Götene, Sweden. This will have the capacity to produce 25 tons of bioLNG daily. In coming years Wärtsilä has planned for new 5 major biogas plant projects for Sweden.
This comprehensive package from Wärtsilä encompasses the delivery, installations, and commissioning of upgrading and liquefaction equipment. The delivery is scheduled for August 2024 and this facility is expected to achieve full operations status at the outset of 2025.
On Feb 1st, 2023: Volvo launched a powerful biogas truck for lowering CO2 on longer transports.
A truck launched by Volvo that can run on liquified biogas, known as bio-LNG, a renewable fuel that can be produced from organic waste which can reduce CO2 emission up to 100%.
The gas-powered trucks, Volvo FH and FM are getting a new power level of 500hp, joining the previous 420 and 460 hp engines, further getting major technical upgrades that make them up to 4% more fuel efficient with a new 10% larger gas tank, contributing towards longer range.
The EU Commission has put forward a plan called REPower EU, where the main focus is to increase domestic production capacity for various energy. The plan is to boost annual biogas production ten times by 2030.

Regional Analysis:
Europe accounts for the largest market share over the forecast period for the global waste-derived market. The factors that boost the market in this region are awareness of clean fuel, demand from end-use industries and advanced technologies like solid waste digestion technology and wastewater digestion technology are the main reasons for the waste-derived biogas industry to grow over the forecast period. Europe is the largest producer of biogas. Germany is the largest market containing two-thirds of Europe's biogas plant capacity.Countries like France, the UK, and Germany are set to be the largest markets for biogas in this region Denmark, Italy, and Netherlands are actively promoting biogas production. According to EBA, from the year 2009 to 2019, there were 1 million biogas plants. Furthermore, numbers of plants in Germany are 11,084, Italy 1655 plants, followed by France 837 plants, UK 715 plants, and Switzerland 634 plants. Additionally, the total installed Electric Capacity IEC from biogas plants in Europe increased by 5% in 2018 reaching 11,082 MW.
According to the American Biogas Council:
The North American waste-derived biogas market significantly showed drastic growth in the coming years. Rising demand for sustainable waste management and a shift towards renewable energy is propelling the growth of the market in this region. Moreover, food waste, livestock manure, and crop residue are the major sources for the production of biogas. Government initiatives in the US and Canada give major subsidies, grants, and regulations to reduce landfill waste. The U.S. is leading due to the growth of industrial activities and agriculture that generate organic waste which is suitable for biogas production. According to the American Biogas Council, in 2023, the U.S biogas industry recorded growth with 100 new projects representing USD 1.8 billion in capital investments which will continue until 2024 and these projects will come into operation by 2024. The new projects produce 66,000 standard cubic feet per minute of biogas, an electricity equivalent to 4,000 football fields of solar panels, to power 6000,000 homes to eliminate 600,000 gasoline cars from the road. Moreover, the U.S. currently has 566 LFG projects, including 23 new projects added in 2023. This growth accounts for 57% of 2023 capital investments and 67% of new biogas production capacity.
